Ciao!!

I have been on hiatus from this blog, basically!  I'm guilty again of getting preoccupied with everything else.

But it's legit! - going to school, working, and since April, being a volunteer DJ at KPSU, Portland State's radio station.  (98.1 FM on the PSU campus; streaming worldwide 24/7 at www.kpsu.org)

I have another blog I often neglect, called Reggae!.  It will get added to though, I swear...  So given that blog's name you know I love reggae.  If you visit that blog you'll see a post titled simply, "I love reggae dubstep."  Check it out...

But I wanted to share a reggae dubstep mix I like here.  It's the kind of thing you might hear on my KPSU show, which is on Fridays at 9pm PST.  Visit www.kpsu.org

Windy & smoky in Tucson

The smoke from fires in neighboring areas has reached Tucson. You used to be able to see the mountains but they're almost totally invisible now. Crazy!

I've thought of a couple jokes about this one...
It's like a Glamour Shot or a photo for the About The Author page in the book I'm writingNOT.

I don't write poetry...

But I had to for an assignment in italian.  We were given four pieces of different(?) poems written by Cesare Pavese and asked to create our own little piece using the vocabulary found in one of the stanzas we were given.  I thought the poems were a little on the melancholy side!  So that's how my last-minute poem turned out:

Nel tuo silenzio, mi sento inghiottita.
Se tu mi respingi,
Al mare dovro' andare.
Via dal tuo buio,
Verso l'alba nel mio cuore.
Il mio sangue viene dal mare;
Il tuo silenzio non verra' con me.

Italian Photographers

At the end of the first quarter of third year italian, I did my presentation about five italian photographers.  When I thought about the names that pop into my head when I think of photographers, I realized none of them were italians.

In order to speed up putting together a brief but well-rounded presentation, I decided to find five different "types" of photographers.

Wanda Wulz - Sperimentale/Ritratti

Letizia Battaglia - Fotogiornalista

Francesco Carrozzini - Giovane/Moda

Dido Fontana - Controverso

Vittorio Sella - Alpinista

About the photographers

Wanda Wulz - was from the Friuli Venezia Giulia, an autonomous region in Italia bordering the Veneto region, Austria, Slovenia, and the Adriatic Sea.  She was born in 1903, and one of her most famous photos was her self-portrait combined with the image of a cat.  She died in 1984, before Photoshop. ; )

Letizia Battaglia - is a Sicilian photojournalist and is known for her work documenting Mafia activity.  She was married when she was 16, and began to take pictures after her divorce in 1971, while raising three daughters.  Battaglia took two photos in 1979 that were later used to associate a former prime minister, Giulio Andreotti, with the Sicilian Mafia.  More recently, Battaglia has been involved with activism for the rights of women and prisoners.

Francesco Carrozzini - was born in Milan in 1982.  This young man has photographed covers for many fashion magazines like L'Uomo Vogue, Vanity Fair, Esquire, and Vogue Deutsch.  He seems to like black and white photography - I like his work.

Dido Fontana - was born in Mezzo Lombardo in Northern Italia.  His style is rough, erotic, provocative, controversial, explosive, heavy on flash, and anti-fashion but pro-fashion at the same time.

Vittorio Sella - was born and died in Biella in the foothills of the Alps (1859 - 1943).  He was a mountain-climber, an alpinista, who became interested in capturing the amazing beauty of the mountains he trekked.  During his career, he traveled to many famous mountains.  I love his photography; it reminds me of Ansel Adams, who saw some of Sella's work presented by the Sierra Club, and said they inspired "a definitely religious awe." (Wikipedia cites this as coming from The Oxford Companion to the Photograph, 2005.)

More from Tucson

I didn't get any photos of jets during this trip, only saw a lot of commercial planes.

A trail on "A" Mountain.  Used sunglasses again,
but this time upside down so the brownest part of the lens was on the bottom.

Driving through a hilly neighborhood of cool and probably kind of expensive homes up toward "A" Mountain.

Over there...

I thought I should try and share a photo from Tucson about every week if I can.  It helps me go through them.
This was up on "A" Mountain and these gentleman didn't notice I took their picture but they saw me crouched behind their bikes and asked about what I was taking a picture of.

Flickr has that cool photo editing tool called Piknik built into its website so I made the color of this one a bit more extreme.

I miss the color of Fall; I'm ready for Spring!

This mushroom...

This mushroom sculpture and me photographing it attracted the attention of the people walking by at the 4th Ave Street Fair.  I think I remember a "Nice shot" comment, haha.  4th avenue is hella cool, and there was no shortage of amazing art and photography at the fair.  One guy had an entire collection of photos from the Columbia Gorge, and I was like !! ♥ ♥ !! Below is my semi-acceptable macro shot of the top of the 'shroom.

A on "A" Mountain

Arizona, been thinkin about ya.

I thought this broken hair tie looked like a fancy capital A so of course, had to get a photo.  Which got the attention of the older gentlemen who had ridden up on their motorcycles, and they agreed.  I'll share one of them later.
